Cryopreservation of sperm ensures the possibility of conception in the future. Cryopreservation of semen avoids the necessity of additional surgery in couples undergoing repeated in IVF or ICSI sperm injection cycles.
The semen is preserved for few following reasons:
- Future family planning
- Develop a sperm bank
- During the treatment (in case the male partner is incapable of ejaculating on a specific day)
- Before undergoing vasectomy
- Prior to chemotherapy or any radical surgery (that might adversely affect fertility)
- Retrieved sperm from PESA or TESA
Each sample is mixed with a special solution to facilitate safety during freezing and thawing. The samples are then placed in special plastic vials that are coded and carefully frozen in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196° C. The entire process is done by specially trained MAGS experts.
If cryopreservation of sperms is done for some impending medical treatment of the donor, the storage period is generally 1 year. For pre-chemotherapy storage, the preservation time extends mostly over 10 years.
